Donna Belt, founder of SpiritWorks, views the creative process as a means to living in the moment, where limitations are unlearned, and illness and grief are gently healed from the inside. Donna was ordained in September 2008 as an interfaith minister at the Chaplaincy Institute in Berkeley, CA.
Artist Statement
As an interfaith minister, art is my vehicle to deep connection with the creative flow that lies beneath all experiences. By shifting to a place of noticing, I become the observer as I play with color and line, always surprised at what arises. Art teaches me to live in a place suspended from judgment, where I learn to recognize the next step offered in the path to uncovering wholeness.
By working quickly, applying light molding paste to a black panel, I allow forms to take shape that suggest the direction of the painting. Themes like Trees of Life, Nests, Angels and Skyscapes unite with colors, calling me to explore. I often dip handmade Japanese papers into acrylic gel so that they become like fabrics, tucked into ridges and floating across surfaces to heighten a design.
I often find that people see my art as meant for them. Pictures may resonate with their dreams or childhood experiences. I’m grateful to be able to play in this world between waking and sleeping, where forms take on healing and meaning of their own.
